Description
Vaersen baai (Vaersen bay) is the former private beach of (the families) of the police force. Now this beach is open for the public. Divers have to pay a fee, for others the entrance is free.
There are three appartments on the beach that you can hire for the weekend. There are also some beach huts for shade. On the left hand side there is a large open building with a bar. This facility is often used for festivities.
This dive site has several oportunities for diving. You can go for a normal dive for the coral, not too deep if you are not too experienced. You can go for the large pontoon (medium to deep dive) if you are experienced or you can go for the pile of car wrecks if you are even more experienced (deep dive).
The dropoff is near the coast. A very recognizable large brain coral at around 10 meters shows you where you have to turn back to the coast at the end of the dive. The coral coverage is quite dense and the coral looks healthy. There are also a lot of large elephants ear sponges and most of the time there is an abundance of fish.
If you want to go to the pontoon you can swim to the dropoff and go underwater there. Swim to the left along the dropoff till you rech the pontoon. The highest point is at around 20 meters, the deepest at around 36 meters. If you go that deep watch your bottom time!
If you want to go for the pile of car wrecks you have to swim to the left on the surface till the buoy. This takes about 20 minutes. There you go under water. The wrecks can be found from around 20 meter till past 40 meters. There is also a large barge there on the bottom (below 40 meters!). As far as I could find out this is the boat with which the wrecks are dumped here. If you do this dive be careful with your bottom time especially when going to the barge.
How to get there
Yu have to drive in the direction of St Michiel. Don't go to St. Michiel though. When you arrive at the main road to St. Michiel and Bullenbaai (recognizable on a large supermarket (Centrum) at the left hand side and a bit further the entrance to Blue bay) you drive past the turn to St. Michiel. You apss the salinas where sometimes the flamingoes can be seen and then take the second turn to the left. Watch carefully because the first turn is hardly visible. It is an asphalt road which leads to the gate of Vaersenbaai. Enter the gate and park your car.
